This year, the Kerkenpad in Aa en Hunze offers a unique opportunity to explore the beautiful Drenthe landscape and visit some of the region's most impressive historical churches. The event takes place on four consecutive Wednesdays: July 17, 24, 31, and August 7. During these days, visitors can tour five remarkable churches, each with a rich history and unique features.

Historical treasures

The route includes five churches, three of which date back to the Middle Ages. Each church has its own charm and all of them feature a beautiful organ. For example, the church in Rolde is famous for its stained glass windows and monumental organ, and it is listed as a national monument. The Village Church in Gieten, with its impressive tower and 1894 organ, is another highlight. The White Church of Gasselte, idyllically located at the edge of the high es, offers a picturesque contrast with its surroundings. In Anloo, visitors will find the Magnus Church, surrounded by thatched farmhouses and centuries-old oak trees. Finally, there is the Village Church of Grolloo, a neoclassical building from 1853, which is also listed as a national monument.

Flexible routes

The Kerkenpad route can be covered on foot, by bicycle, or by car, making the event accessible to everyone. The total distance is 37 kilometers, but visitors can start at any point and plan their route according to their own preferences. Along the way, there are numerous spots to stop for a snack, a drink, or a picnic. Thanks to the availability of GPS files, navigating this year is even easier.

Local guides

From 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, guides will be present in almost all churches to inform visitors about the history and architecture of the buildings. These knowledgeable guides are happy to share their insights, making the visit even more interesting.
