Burnt-out getaway car from Assen art theft found in Rolde
A spectacular art heist has taken place in Assen, where valuable gold artifacts were stolen from the Drents Museum. The perpetrators fled in a stolen car, which was later found burned out under a viaduct near Rolde. Police suspect that the criminals then switched to another vehicle and are calling on witnesses to come forward.
During the night of Friday, January 24, to Saturday, January 25, 2025, an art theft occurred at the Drents Museum in Assen. During this break-in, valuable gold artifacts were stolen, including a golden helmet and three bracelets from the Dacian period. The stolen objects were on loan from the National History Museum of Romania and were part of the exhibition "Dacia: Realm of Gold and Silver."
After the break-in, the perpetrators fled in a dark gray Volkswagen Golf, which had been stolen a few days earlier in Alkmaar. Shortly after the heist, this car was found burned out under a viaduct near Rolde. Police suspect that after setting the Volkswagen on fire, the perpetrators switched to another vehicle and are calling on witnesses to come forward.
Police have released footage showing another vehicle stopping shortly after the fire was set and then driving away in the direction of Nooitgedacht. This happened around 3:50 AM on Saturday morning. Witnesses who saw anything suspicious near the viaduct in Rolde or have information about the possible getaway car are urged to contact the police.
Rolde’s involvement in this case is limited to the discovery of the burned-out getaway car. Nevertheless, information from the community is of great importance to the investigation. Residents are urged to stay alert and share any relevant information with the authorities.
