Rolder Horse Market Kicks Off

The Rolder Horse Market, a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages, began this morning with a lively start as dozens of animals, enthusiastic traders, and visitors made their appearance. What started as a simple cattle market has since evolved into a multifaceted and social village festival that not only brings the local community together but also attracts visitors from the wider area.

The annual horse market in Rolde opened its gates early this morning. Around 5:45 AM, the first animals arrived, and the unloading of horses, ponies, and donkeys was already in full swing. Soon, the market was filled with a variety of buyers and sellers, from professional traders to hobbyists looking to sell their surplus ponies.

In addition to traders, the market also attracted many curious visitors who wanted to experience the unique atmosphere or were in search of a new horse. The market appeals to a broad audience, including those without a specific intention to buy, who might still be tempted by the sight of a special animal. The selection was diverse, with horses of all kinds and sizes, as well as ponies and donkeys. By seven o'clock, the crowd had grown considerably, with an estimated 70 to 80 animals present, and the expectation that this number would continue to rise throughout the day. The supply of animals is expected to continue until around 10 AM.

A rich history

The origins of the Rolder Market lie in the Middle Ages when it was an important cattle market for local farmers and traders. Since 1785, the market has been held on the second Tuesday of September and has been the place to trade horses and foals. Over the years, the Rolder Market has evolved from a simple cattle market into a multifaceted village festival, while still retaining its historical character. In addition to horse trading, there are also artisanal products for sale, and various festivities take place that keep the tradition alive.

Over time, the market has expanded to include a general goods market and various festive activities, extending the event to a duration of five days. This expansion underscores the rich history of Rolde as a trading center. In the past, livestock farmers came from far and wide, even from Groningen, to buy horses and other livestock. Today, the Rolder Market is one of the few remaining horse markets in Drenthe and one of the largest events in the region.

More than Just a market

The Rolder Horse Market is more than just a market; it is an important social and cultural event for the community. In recent decades, it has grown into a village festival for everyone, with activities for young and old. From sporting challenges such as fun runs and fat tire races to lively music evenings, a business parade, and a market breakfast. The involvement of residents, entrepreneurs, associations, and companies is great, contributing to the vibrancy of the festival and strengthening community bonds. Every year, there is a great deal of enthusiasm to continue and let this historic tradition flourish.

With a rich history and a vibrant future, the Rolder Horse Market remains an important event that continues to connect the community of Rolde and its visitors.
