The municipality of Aa en Hunze has closed the financial year 2023 with a positive result of 2.3 million euros. This announcement was made following the adoption of the 2023 Annual Accounts by the municipal executive.

Gains and increased costs

According to alderman Kiena ten Brink, the positive result is partly due to profits from land exploitation and additional revenues from the general grant, tourist tax, and fees. However, the municipality also faced higher costs due to inflation and rising collective labor agreements, impacting expenses related to public green spaces, swimming pools, sports halls, and healthcare costs.

Key activities in 2023

In 2023, the municipality celebrated its 25th anniversary. To mark this occasion, a piece of art was created using photos from residents and organizations, which was placed in the council chamber. The municipality focused on strengthening relationships with villages, organizations, and residents, resulting in the appointment of an environmental advisor and a dedicated contact point for each village.

Additionally, processes for public space reports and telephone services were improved, and the municipality's new website was launched. The Youth Reform Agenda was implemented through the establishment of the Growing Up Taskforce, in collaboration with Attenta, Impuls, CKC, and PrimAH. Investments were made in educational care arrangements for students with specific support needs.

Together with partners, the municipality implemented the Healthy and Active Life Agreement and established two funds to support low-income residents. Aa en Hunze also co-hosted the National Sports Week.

Recreation and tourism

Recreation and tourism remain important sectors in Aa en Hunze. The municipality worked with residents, entrepreneurs, and recreation and nature organizations to balance landscape and tourism. Discussions were held with entrepreneurs about the development of a future-proof business park. The Traffic and Transport Plan was updated, road safety assessed, and the Rolde – Anderen road route was rebuilt. Efforts were also made to create new cycle paths and to acquire three electric vehicles for the municipal services.

Housing and refugees

The municipality made progress in its housing construction task and started the new construction of primary school De Kameleon in Eexterveen after the summer holidays. Additionally, initiatives for the reception and housing of refugees and status holders continued. With the enactment of the new Environmental Act, various village initiatives were financially supported through the livability fund.

Future outlook

Alderman Kiena ten Brink emphasizes that despite financial challenges, the municipality, together with residents, continues to strive to keep Aa en Hunze beautiful. The Annual Accounts will be on the agenda of the council meeting on June 27, 2024, along with the 2024 Administrative Report, which provides an interim update on ongoing activities. The conclusion is that the municipality is on track with most of its activities.
