Rolde, an idyllic esdorp in the heart of Drenthe. In 2000 the village had approximately 3743 inhabitants and 1647 homes. Rolde offers visitors a unique blend of historic sites, natural splendor and a vibrant community.

The name Rolde, which was originally "Roetlo", was first mentioned in 1232 and later evolved into "Roelte" before taking its current name. The name possibly means "cleared forest" or "red forest," similar to other place names in the region such as Grolloo and Eleveld.

Historically, Rolde was an important administrative center in Drenthe. It was the seat of the Etstoel, the highest court of the region, which met in Rolde until 1688. This underlines the prominent role of the village in regional governance and justice.

One of the most striking historical sights in Rolde is the imposing Jacobuskerk. This Gothic church dates back to the 13th century and has a rich history of religious gatherings and ceremonies.
