The Hertenkamp (Deer Camp) of Rolde, located on the Bosrand, is not just any place. It is a vibrant community of diverse animal species that enchants both young and old. With its rich history and important social function, the Hertenkamp is a true treasure for the residents of Rolde and far beyond.

A diversity of animal life

Numerous animal species live side by side on the grounds of the Hertenkamp. Visitors can marvel at the majestic deer, graceful swans, frisky rabbits and an array of poultry including chickens, geese, ducks, peacocks and turkeys. It is a true symphony of natural splendor.

New members are added to this community throughout the year. Ducks and geese are born in the spring, while young deer are born in the summer months. And throughout the year, chicken chicks frolic around, so there is always new life to admire.

Volunteers: The keepers of the Hertenkamp

The welfare of the animals is central to the Hertenkamp, and this is made possible by the dedicated efforts of volunteers. During the week, the animals are lovingly cared for by Trans volunteers, while enthusiastic volunteers from the area care for them at weekends. In addition to feeding, they also take care of the maintenance of the Deer Park, ensuring that it remains a safe and hospitable environment for both animals and visitors.

Worth a visit

A visit to the Hertenkamp is a valuable experience for both young and old. The proximity of the forest offers the opportunity to combine a walk with admiring the animals. It is an opportunity to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature, and at the same time a chance to feel connected to the animal world.

However, a friendly request to all visitors to keep their dogs on a leash out of respect for the animals. Although bread feeding is permitted, visitors are asked to do so in moderation. The animals are already amply supplied with food, and the additional feeding mainly serves as a friendly gesture towards the animals.

A fight for preservation

The history of the Hertenkamp is one of struggle and victory. In 2000, the survival of the Hertenkamp was threatened by austerity measures by the municipality of Aa and Hunze. The proposal to close the park and sell the land was met with fierce resistance from the community.

Thanks to the determination of opposition parties, village interests and business associations, and with the support of more than 1,500 signatures, the plan to abolish the Hertenkamp was ultimately rejected. The municipal council decided that the people of Rolde themselves would be responsible for the management of the Hertenkamp.

On September 1, 2003, this responsibility was officially transferred to the Hertenkamp Rolde Foundation, thus securing the future of the Hertenkamp. De Hertenkamp remains not only a place of natural enjoyment, but also a symbol of the power of community spirit and the importance of preserving our natural heritage.
