Hiding den

Hidden deep in the park is the hiding place. This underground forest hut, constructed of concrete and supported by poles, reminds the inhabitants of the heroic deeds of the people who took refuge here from the occupying forces during the Second World War.

At the entrance to the hut is a sober stone memorial stone, a symbol of tribute to the countless people in hiding who risked their lives here for shorter or longer periods of time. But the monument also serves as a reminder of eight local resistance fighters who lost their lives due to betrayal.

The names of these heroes are forever etched in the history of Diever: Thijs Gerhardus Drupsteen from Hasselt, Jan Eggink, Roelof Eggink and Thijs Eggink from Dwingeloo, Hilbert Gunnink from Ruinerwold, Geert Gerhardus Koster from Diever, Sebastiaan van Nooten from Schoonhoven and Hermannus Fox from Smilde. Their courageous struggle and the ultimate sacrifice they made remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
