On the Kerkbrink in Rolde there is a monument made of white natural stone, showing a man carrying a drinking trough. The names of various war victims are engraved along the edge of the drinking trough.

History of the monument

The monument on Kerkbrink was erected to commemorate all the people who lost their lives in the May days of 1940, during the occupation or in the former Dutch East Indies. Among them were twelve Jewish fellow citizens. The names of these Jewish victims are:

  • Israel M. Fiesler
  • Masche Fiesler-Nachtgeist
  • Aron Schaap
  • August Schaap
  • Bendix Schaap
  • Fritz Schaap
  • Joachim Schaap
  • Leoni J.A. Schaap
  • Sonja Schaap
  • Mily Schaap-Simon
  • Anna Schaap-Stein

These families were all murdered in Auschwitz between 1942 and 1944. The names of these families and a number of other names are printed on the edge of the monument:

  • Frederik Klaassens, verzet, doodgeschoten op 08-04-1945 in Schoonloo
  • Jantinus Klaassens, verzet, doodgeschoten op 08-04-1945 in Schoonloo
  • Aielko Venema, soldaat Ekl.OVW.2-1-1 RI, gesneuveld 17 januari 1947 te Medan
  • Geert van Schooneveld, soldaat OVW.StCie 1-RJ, gesneuveld 1 januari 1947 te Padang
  • Jan Hommes, koopvaardij, overleden op 28 mei 1942 te Long Isoen (Borneo)
  • Otto Popkes, soldaat M.C.-I-1 R.I., gesneuveld 11-05-1940 te Wassenaar.
  • Jan ter Steege, soldaat St.-III-14 R.A., gesneuveld 12-05-1940 te Dubbeldam.
  • Hendrik Tjarks, overleden op 14 oktober 1944 te Zöschen, wegens dwangarbeid.

The monument was made by Paul Grégoire from Amsterdam and unveiled on May 14, 1948.
