Village pump
The renovated work of art, formerly the village pump, is a striking addition to the center of Rolde. Unveiled by councilor Ivo Berghuis and artist Arie Fonk on June 16, 2022, it marks the revival of a historical element dating back to the village's 800th anniversary in 1987. The pump, long out of action, has been revived and will serve as a work of art and water tap for passers-by, including Pieterpadlopers.
The redevelopment of the village pump not only contributes to the aesthetics of Rolde, but also offers practical benefits to the community. Councilor Berghuis emphasizes the importance of this 'practical work of art', in which form and function come together. It is not only a visually attractive element, but also a functional facility for walkers and cyclists.
The artwork, designed by Arie Fonk, tells a story about time, with a wall consisting of seven sections of different heights that symbolize different periods. Fonk reflects on the transience of the work of art itself and the temporary nature of everything in life. The water from the pump, tasted for the first time by councilor Berghuis, symbolizes not only the renewed functionality of the pump, but also its connection with the region's natural resources.
