De Tijdgeest van de Racerij
Colourful sculpture from 2016 by the artist Eiiz Gihili, part of the Horsepower Mania project about motor racing around the TT Circuit Assen.
At the centre of the sculpture, Marc Márquez, with his race number 93, races through a dreamlike landscape. Around him spectators cheer, and a commentator describes the race. Márquez stands for the motor sport of today.
Around him is the history of the TT Circuit Assen: Piet van Wijngaarden, who won the first TT in 1925, and Giacomo Agostini, who won in Assen fourteen times. Then there are 'Jumping Jack' Middelburg, who won in Assen in 1980, Wil Hartog, 'de witte reus' (the white giant), who won in 1977 on his Suzuki, and Valentino Rossi, 'The Doctor', with his number 46, who won in Assen in 1997. The sidecar riders Streuer and Schnieders, winners in 1987 and 1991, are on the sculpture too.
The sculpture is part of Horsepower Mania, a project commissioned by Tour de TT. Six sculptures about racing stand in villages and towns around the circuit, each owned by the municipality where it stands:
- Hooghalen: Snelle Invasie (municipality of Midden-Drenthe)
- Grolloo: Publieke Aantrekkingskracht (municipality of Aa en Hunze)
- Schoonloo: Oneindige Keten (municipality of Aa en Hunze)
- Assen: Moto GP op zijn kop (municipality of Assen)
- Borger: De Zoete Strijd op het Circuit (municipality of Borger-Odoorn)
- Rolde: De Tijdgeest van de Racerij (municipality of Aa en Hunze)
