De Boerhoornblazer
The statue of the farmer's horn blower represents a deeply rooted tradition in Drenthe, where the farmer's horn was an important means of communication in the isolated villages of the region. The statue symbolizes the naivety and community spirit that are characteristic of the Drenthe countryside.
The origin
In earlier times, when means of communication were limited, the farmer's horn played a crucial role in the daily life of the local community. When the call of the farmer's horn sounded through the village, everyone knew that something special was happening. The sound of the horn gathered the farmers together, whether it was to jointly fulfill a task, make an important decision, or to respond to emergencies such as fire or other calamities.
The meetings were often held in special places in the village, such as under an oak tree, on the lawn at a farm, or on the village green. The most important farmer was chosen as the horn farmer and had the responsibility to use the farmer's horn as a starting signal for important events, such as the start of the corn harvest.
Tribute
The statue of the farmer's horn blower is a tribute to this old tradition and was donated by the municipal council of Rolde to the Boermarke Rolde on September 10, 1985 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Rolder Markt. The statue, made by E.H. by Dulmen Krumpelman from Rolde, captures the moment of the bugler in a timeless and authentic setting, conveying his message to the community.
