Bust of Anne de Vries
The statue of Anne de Vries, a tribute to the famous teacher and writer, is a bust on a brick plinth. Anne de Vries, born in Assen in 1904 and died in Zeist in 1964, gained fame through his iconic work "Bartje" (1935), a regional novel that highlighted the life of the Drenthe boy Bartje Bartels. The statue, unveiled on May 20, 2006 by Mr. Weggemans, deputy of culture of the province of Drenthe, honors his legacy and literary contribution to the region.
It is striking that behind the bust is a small replica of the statue of Bartje, made by Suze Boschma-Berkhout. This addition emphasizes the connection between Anne de Vries' work and Bartje's story, and strengthens the cultural heritage that they both represent. The statue serves as a reminder of the influential role Anne de Vries played in literature and education, and as a source of inspiration for future generations.
