Village Museum De Kluis, located in the picturesque village of Eext in the province of Drenthe, is a cultural heritage site that preserves and exhibits the rich history and traditions of the region. Housed in a historic farmhouse where former freezer vaults are on display, this museum offers visitors an insightful journey through time, from prehistory to the present.

Collection and exhibitions

The museum was founded to record and present the history of Eext and the surrounding villages. The collection consists of a wide range of objects, documents and photographs that paint a picture of daily life in the village over the centuries. The exhibitions range from archaeological finds from the Iron Age and the Roman period to the more recent history of the twentieth century.

A number of display cases display ancient objects found on the banks of the Hunze and in the vicinity of Eext. These archaeological finds provide a fascinating insight into the early habitation of the region. In addition, the museum has an extensive model that provides a detailed picture of Eext in 1754, as seen by painter Van Drielst during his working visit to the village.

Local community

One of the most striking aspects of De Kluis Village Museum is its focus on the local community. Many of the exhibited objects come from residents of Eext itself, which gives a personal and authentic touch to the exhibitions. Visitors can admire ancient utensils, agricultural tools and traditional clothing, as well as works of art and craft creations that reflect the cultural life of the region.

Historical buildings

The museum is located in a former freezer vault, built in 1958, which originally contained 120 freezer cells for storing vegetables and meat. With the arrival of chest freezers for private use, the building lost its function around 1970. Nowadays it is an exhibition space including old vanished businesses, such as a workshop, bakery, forge and hairdresser.

In one part of the museum, a living room from the beginning of the last century has been recreated. This "period room" has an authentic ceiling and a cupboard wall with box bed, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the lives of their grandparents and great-grandparents.

Events

The museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions and events that highlight specific themes or periods in history. These events range from lectures and workshops to historical walks and village tours. In addition, the museum plays an important educational role with the project “Out and about with Geessie and Geert”, which introduces students from groups 5 and 6 from schools in the municipality of Aa and Hunze to local heritage.

Volunteers

The museum is largely run by volunteers from the community, which underlines the close bond between the museum and the residents of Eext. These volunteers contribute to the preservation of the collection, give tours and help with the organization of events. Their dedication and passion are clearly noticeable and contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the museum.

Initiatives

In addition to managing the permanent exhibition, De Kluis also develops other initiatives to preserve and display the history of the village and the region. An example of this is the composition of a bicycle tour (25 km) and a circular walk (3 km) in and around Eext, with the title “Eext then and now”. These routes offer many interesting facts and photos and are available at the museum for a small fee.

In short, De Kluis Village Museum is more than just a collection of old objects; it is a vivid memory of the past and a source of pride for the residents of Eext. It offers a unique insight into local history and culture and plays an essential role in the preservation and celebration of Drenthe's heritage. Visitors of all ages will appreciate the valuable lessons and stories the museum has to offer.
