The exhibition: The lives of the dolmen builders

Upon entering, the journey of discovery begins with an extensive exhibition about the dolmen builders. This exhibition provides an in-depth insight into how our ancestors lived, worked and performed their rituals more than 5,000 years ago. Films, funnel cup displays, dioramas and interactive games bring history to life. Visitors can delve into the lifestyle of these early farmers and understand how and why they built the impressive dolmens.

Primal stories app: A multimedia adventure

To make the experience even richer, there is the Primal Stories app. This multimedia tour offers access to 200 stories spread across the entire site of the Hunebed Center. With the help of videos, texts and old photos, visitors get an even better picture of prehistoric times. In the exhibition you will find signs with numbers that correspond to the numbers in the app. You will receive a code for this upon entry. These stories can be found not only in the exhibition, but also in the Prehistoric Park, the Keientuin and at the largest dolmen.

Masterpieces from the Dolmen Center

The Hunebed Center houses some extraordinary pieces of Dutch history. The absolute highlight is the largest dolmen in the Netherlands, the oldest monument in the country and an essential part of Dutch history education. Other highlights that should not be missed are: the reconstructed house of a family of dolmen builders, the fields where they grew their crops, the funnel beaker and the sharpened axe. These objects provide a vivid picture of the daily life and skills of the dolmen builders.

The largest dolmen

A visit to the largest dolmen, which is located right next to the Dolmen Center, makes a deep impression. Walking and cycling in Drenthe

After a visit to the museum, there is the opportunity to further explore the knowledge gained in the Drenthe landscape. The Dolmen Center offers free walking and cycling routes that take visitors along the traces of prehistoric times. These routes are also available digitally on the Dolmen Center website, so that everyone can discover the beautiful Drenthe landscape with its rich history at their own pace.

  • Saturday and Sunday: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

*On Mondays the Dolmen Center is only open during school holidays. In addition, the Dolmen Center is also open on official holidays (except December 25, December 31 and January 1)
